It was awarded grade "A" by the NAAC.

Campuses
Situated at Hazratbal, an idyllic area on the western side of the fabulous Dal Lake of Srinagar and held in the veneration by the Muslims for the mosque that enshrines the relic of the prophet Muhammad, the university is spread over 263 acres (1.06 km2) of lush green land with three adjacent campuses of exquisite beauty: Amar Singh Bagh, Naseem Bagh and Mirza Bagh.

Amar Singh Bagh is on the bank of Dal Lake having on its other sides a background of mountainous amphitheater rising to a great above its crystal clear water. Naseem Bagh, or "the garden of breeze", laid originally by Mughal Emperor Akbar, is a magnificent grove of chinar trees, facing the artificially formed island, Sona Lank or the "Golden Island", in the centre of the northern portion of the lake. Mirza Bagh, now the "University Town", housing the staff quarters of the university, is on the bank of the famous Nageen Lake. The unique combination of lake and mountain scenery, and the impressive calm and serene ambiance provide a highly congenial atmosphere for the philosopher's contemplation and the scientist's research.

The main campus at Hazratbal Srinagar houses maximum postgraduate departments and research and other centres. However, pursuant to the decision of the university to develop the Naseem Bagh into a heritage site, many departments were shifted from the Naseem Bagh to the main campus and efforts are on to shift the remaining ones to fully develop the Naseem Bagh into a heritage garden. Naseem Bagh being converted into in heritage site has a noble groove of 696 chinar trees which are being taken care of in active collaboration with the state and other agencies. Zakura Campus is the third campus situated in proximity of the main campus. It has recently acquired 300 kanals of land at the site to meet expansion requirements.

The university has established two satellite campuses in its territorial jurisdiction in South and North Kashmir. The South Campus at Fateh Garh, Islamabad (Anantnag), 55 km from Srinagar, was commissioned in 2009. It is spread over 259 kanals of land. The North Campus at Delina, Baramullah, 45 km from Srinagar, is spread over 559 kanals. Three more campuses at Kupwara, Kargil and Leh are coming up and the efforts are on to acquire necessary land for the purpose.

History
The university arose of humble origins immediately after Independence when in 1948 A.D. the state government established an institute for conduct of examinations with its headquarters at Srinagar, Justice J.N. Wazir being its honorary vice-chancellor. This was followed by a noble effort by the authorities to revive the old tradition of learning and teaching, an essential feature of ancient Kashmir, through the establishment of three postgraduate departments in 1956: English at Srinagar and Economics & Geology at Jammu. Thus came into being a full-fledged university, then christened the University of Jammu & Kashmir. A.A.A. Fyzee was appointed as its first full-time vice-chancellor in 1957. The university was shifted to the present campus, known as Amar Singh Bagh, when the land was donated by Dr. Karan Singh, its second chancellor. A lay-out plan was prepared by Fayaz-ud-Din, chief town planner from what is now Andhra Pradesh and G.B. Mhatre, an eminent architect of Mumbai. With the financial assistance provided by the University Grants Commission and state government, a series of construction works began at the campus in 1959, with the foundation stone laid for the Arts Faculty by Bakhshi Ghulam Mohammad, the then prime ninister of the state, on 5 June 1959. The faculty was commissioned on 1 August 1960 by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the then vice-president of the country.

In 1965 the university was recognized on federal basis and divided into two divisions of equal status — one for the Jammu and the other for the province of Kashmir — with a central organization having specific legislative and executive powers relating to budget, finance, planning, coordination, improvement of standards of teaching and examinations and devising of course of studies. Each division has its own executive body to run day-to-day administration and its own academic bodies to formulate programmes and policies. The pro-vice-chancellor was the chief executive and academic officer of the concerned division while the vice-chancellor was the principal executive and academic head of the whole university. G.A. Mukhtar, the then educational adviser to the state government, was appointed the first pro-vice-chancellor of the Kashmir division.

By an ordinance promulgated by the governor of the J&K on 5 September 1969, which was subsequently replaced by an Act of the state legislature that was published in the government Gazette on 10 November 1969, the University of Jammu & Kashmir was bifurcated into full-fledged universities: the University of Jammu and the University of Kashmir. Accordingly, the statues and regulations of the Jammu and Kashmir University Act, 1965 were modified.

Since 1956 A.D., this academic institution has come a long way and has developed into a multi-faculty University, imparting instruction in various subjects in the Faculty of Arts, Social Sciences, Education, Commerce and Management Studies, Law, Applied Sciences and Technology, Physical & Material Sciences, Biological Sciences, Medicine, Dental Surgery,Engineering, Music & Fine Arts and Oriental Learning, all manned by academics with considerable teaching and research experience, some of whom occupy places of eminence in the academic world.

Library
Besides the departmental libraries, the university has a centrally heated central library, called Allama Iqbal (r.a) Library, with a vast collection of books, leading national and international journals and magazines and an internet facility. The central location of the magnificent edifice, at a walking distance from the departments, renders it easily accessible to teachers, research scholars and students.
